Popa Chubby - Booty and the Beast (1995)

Popa Chubby's majorlabel debut album is an inspiring set of energetic, gutbucket bluesrock, filled with exceptional playing. Chubby has soul, even if he doesn't quite cut it as a songwriter; there aren't many songs that are inventive or memorable. But as an instrumental workout, Booty and the Beast is terrific. Using the blues as a basic foundation, Popa Chubby spins off into new directions, incorporating bits of rock and jazz to his forceful playing. His guitar playing is what makes the album a promising debut. -

Dead Guy Blues - Dead Guy Blues (2005)

Living as an illegal alien and partying like a rock star in Mexico City for 7 years guitarist/singer/songwriter Jeff Powers cut his teeth in various blues bands. Though Jeff moved to Mexico City to perform and teach classical guitar he soon dropped out of the cozy and well paid classical world to live and play in the down and dirty clubs, jails and places at the end of dirt roads.
Barely eking out a living Jeff would cross the entire city with guitar and amp in hand by bus and subway to get to a gig or rehearsal but during his years there he wrote over 200 songs and developed his own standout style of blues guitar based around his virtuoso classical technique.
It took a lot of gigs, tequila, beer and mota (a staple of the Mexican bluesman) to make the change but Jeff left Cleveland as a classical artist and returned a full fledged bluesman. He traded in his tux for a bad ass hat.

Nick Moss & The Flip Tops - Play it 'til tomorow [2-CD set] (2007)

Play It 'Til Tomorrow is Nick Moss' most ambitious recording project yet: two jam-packed discs spotlighting the entire width and breadth of his band's sonic attack. Longtime fans will immediately recognize the stinging electric blues sound that characterizes the first CD, but on disc two Nick introduces an 'unplugged' side that he's never before tapped in the studio. The uncommon versatility of the Flip Tops-ex-Legendary Blues Band keyboardist Willie Oshawny (who switches over to bass for four cuts and second guitar on another), harpist and fretsman extraordinaire Gerry Hundt, and veteran drummer Bob Carter - plays a huge role in the collection's extraordinary variety. Inherently grasping the value of playing as a rock-solid unit, the Flip Tops cook up steady-surging grooves while Nick's slashing guitar solos make every note count and every phrase resonate with authority. Adding to the mix are special guests Eddie Taylor Jr. and Barrelhouse Chuck.

Bob Carter - drums
Gerry Hundt - guitar, harp, bass guitar
Nick Moss - vocals, guitar, harp
Willie Oshawny - piano, organ, keyboard, bass guitar
Also: Eddie Taylor, Jr., Barrelhouse Chuck, Kate Moss

Deborah Bonham - The Old Hyde (2004)

Deborah Bonham has rock music in her genes. The little sister of Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, she grew up immersed in that world and here she makes her own foray into writing and performing with this high quality collection of bluesy, ballsy country-tinged tracks.

Bonham has been blessed with a powerful voice. At her best (on her cover of Stay With Me Baby and on her own song Go Now) she can sound rather like Janis Joplin, all sultry and Southern, with a throat that's no stranger to tobacco products or the odd sweet shot of Jim Beam.

Named after the Bonham family home, the house built by John and her other brother Michael, The Old Hyde is unsurprisingly a family affair with her nephew Jason on drumming duties for much of the album - that is when her mate Mick Fleetwood isn't doing the honours on Open Up Your Heart. Bonham is at her best when letting go and riding high on a tide of guitars. Her guitarist Peter Bullick gives her what she needs in this respect and the album also features a guest spot by Pretenders' guitarist Robbie McIntosh as well as the one by Fleetwood. Of her own tracks, Go Now and Religion showcase her talents to best effect and she certainly knows how to handle a standard.

Alex Maryol - Make Everything Alright (2003)

Alex is a young 24 year old Blues master who performs mostly original 'Santa Fe Blues' tunes. Playing the guitar when he was only seven years old, Maryol began developing musical tastes when most kids learn to ride bikes. After listening to Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and Johnny Rivers with his dad, his appreciation for the blues took hold early in high school. He bacame a fan of the Rolling Stones and began studying roots musicians like Robert Johnson, R.L. Burnside and Stevie Ray Vaughan. "Really all modern music - rock, funk, all of it - can be traced back to the blues," Maryol says.

Taj Mahal - Taj's Blues (1968)

Taj Mahal's dazzling 1968 debut provides the foundation for this 12-song overview of the bluesman's early solo years. Tracks like "Leaving Trunk" and "Statesboro Blues" from that first record signaled the arrival of a young black man grounded in tradition yet committed to innovation. Over the next half-dozen years, Taj fulfilled much of that promise. Taj's Blues eschews his previous island folk experiments in favor of country blues inspired by Sleepy John Estes and Mississippi John Hurt. --Steven Stolder

Texas Slim - I Have Arrived (2005)

Texas Slim could very well be a reincarnate of a passed soulful singer who plays guitar and is once again carving out a niche in music history.

Born and raised in Dallas, TX.... Slim from an early age met and played with the great Alex Moore, (who first recorded the blues in 1929) and later Little Joe Blue.

In March of 2002 Slim released his second solo effort "I Have Arrived" which includes the talents of Aaron Comess (Spin Doctors). In addition to his own records, Slim has recorded and toured with Cold Blue Steel, Randy McAllister, FOAMY (New Bohemians) and has graced the stages of the House of Blues as well as one of the first artists to ever play a Hard Rock Cafe.

Son Roberts Band - You Don't Know Yet (2007)

Described by USA Blues Revue magazine as offering up "haunted, swampy grooves, Delta-flavored", the Son Roberts Band is an innovative leader in the growing wave of blues-inspired Canadian bands "not content to re-hash old blues standards," says CBC Radio One. UK-based Blues Matters Magazine writes in their Feb 2008 issue: "Something distinct and original is starting to emerge from traditional roots music in Canada and this is an indication of the direction the music is taking. The fresh sound of this album features boogie, swamp-filled rhythm and a really tight groove ... a real pleasant surprise and we look forward to more in the future.”
